It's a bit early, but I feel a heads-up is in order. I am traveling with my fellow college art students (and advisor) to the sunny island of Andros in the Bahamas. Don't get too excited, we're basically roughing it for a good part. Our mission: to bring pollution of Andros' beautiful beached to attention. My prof at IUP, Steve Loar, has had the environment's well-being close to his heart for years now. One of the projects he has his students work on is a new medium for artists: post consumer plastic products. For my class, I made a charming little platapus out of plastic bottles, screws, pop-rivets, etc. And now we're taking our plastic working skillz to the beach! We are also having a workshop at the College of the Bahamas, and an exhibition of our creations at a gallery on the neighboring island called the HUB (the gallery, not the island, which is Nassau). Wish us luck, and I will probably post the web address for the site we're going to set up during/after(?) our trip! And don't forget to pray for us! We have a variety of potential mini-disasters: malaria, wild animals, swine flu (I guess, it's everywhere else, now), these weird little water traps on the beach that'll suck you into the ocean, hot temps, sunburn, the list goes on!
